British Art Fair x The Conran Shop

British Art Fair and The Conran Shop join forces in an exclusive partnership this autumn, placing Modern British artworks by John Hoyland and Tracey Emin in The Conran Shop’s new three-storey flagship on Sloane Square.

The brand’s late founder, Sir Terence Conran was known for his passion of design, architecture and art, and has played a big part in the transformation of the look and feel of the modern British home over the last decades. With the launch of his Habitat stores in 1964 and later, The Conran Shop in 1983, Sir Terence brought modern design to the wider population, instigating a new age of aesthetic awareness.

When the contents of his Berkshire home were auctioned last year at Bonham’s, design and art devotees alike were given a window into Sir Terence’s life of Modern British art: his collection included works by ModBrit artists such as Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Howard Hodgkins, Allen Jones, David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Smith, Patrick Caulfield, Ben Nicholson, Gillian Ayres, Lynn Chadwick, and many more. All these artists, of course, come straight from the British Art Fair stable, making the partnership between British Art Fair and The Conran Shop a natural fit.

Modern British Art x Iconic Modern Design works can be found exclusively on display on the ground floor of The Conran Shop’s new flagship store. Knock-out pieces by John Hoyland and Tracey Emin were selected from the collection of British Art Fair exhibitor and Chelsea art gallerist, Tanya Baxter Contemporary. The two Hoyland pieces featured in the space are large abstract mid-career acrylics; Turn Turn (1983) and Helel (1988) – and the Emin’s are from her autobiographical 2020 lithograph series ‘These Feelings Were True’. The display, on show until October 11, is intended as an extension to British Art Fair 2023; ticket holders are invited to visit the new flagship store as part of their Fair experience.

“British Art Fair and the Conran Shop have a natural symbiosis,” says Will Ramsay, CEO of British Art Fair. “Both brands were pioneers in promoting Modern British art and design and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”

“None of our generation will forget the arrival of Habitat on the British High Street,” says Gay Hutson, British Art Fair director. “It marked a wake-up call across the country to the merits of modern design and the start of a new movement. When we launched British Art Fair in the 1980s it was with the same motivation: to raise national awareness about the work of Britain’s modern artists and move their work into domestic rather than institutional environments. The Conran Shop is an iconic brand today and we are delighted to be working together.”

We’re incredibly pleased to have partnered with British Art Fair for the opening of our new flagship store, on Sloane Square. Bringing art into the space has really elevated the space and the curated edit of works on display, by John Hoyland and Tracey Emin, marry exceptionally well with our collections. The partnership is a strong pairing between two British brands which presents an opportunity for both The Conran Shop and British Art Fair to engage with a new audience respectively as art and design unite in a way which is accessible to the consumer.
